LAGACY AND A PRESTIGIOUS PAST
At the centre of The City Built by Gentlemen for Gentlemen, The Barrister Hotel was born by way of the transformation of the Palazzo that for many years housed one of Malta’s premier law firms. Prior to providing the backdrop to countless debates, contributing to the evolution of the island’s legal framework, the building lived through an array of life experiences. Situated a mere 200 metres from the prestigious Grandmaster’s Palace, and in the midst of The (populist) Gut, over time the Palazzo played host to the ‘life and soul’ of the capital.

CONCEPT AND VISION
The Barrister Hotel pays tribute to Valletta’s historical ancestry and status as a cultural hub. Tremendous attention has been paid to accentuating the building’s temporal relics, as we have ensured to reinject the style and sophistication that the venue has cultivated throughout its rich history.
HISTORICAL CHARM & BESPOKE DESIGN
The dream stemmed in 2005, when the owners started exploring every corner of Valletta looking for the ideal spot, a setting where they would use their years of hospitality and international living savoir-faire to create travel experiences for the discerning guest. That charming little hotel where discreet yet distinguished services are delivered.
The task proved ominous, as that ideal blend of central location and historical heritage within a convivial layout does not come easy in buildings designed some hundreds of years ago. Finally, 57 St Christopher’s Street came available; - two corners away from where Pjazza Regina (a tribute to HRM the late Queen Victoria) meets the Grandmaster’s Palace. The idyllic venue where travellers can experience life at the capital whilst being pampered in 21st century indulgences.
The owners got captivated by the soul and history of the building and wanted to preserve its genuine spirit whilst giving free rein to their love for contemporary artform. To this aim, a careful selection for the ideal design companion was launched, culminating in the relationship with the creative people at Daaa Haus. The mission was to create the ultimate functional space, in perfect harmony with the refined details of as many authentic features as possible. Much like Valletta’s heritage, the hotel’s decor captures the essence of the various periods in the city’s history; from the grandeur of the Knights, all the way to the understated elegance of the British Empire. In-room styling is a juxtaposition of classical and vintage references, creating timeless splendour. Each and every corner of the building was studied, discovering ways to enhance the location’s offerings. ‘Modernisation’ was limited to the necessary, in order to preserve as many authentic features as possible.
Whilst no stone was left unturned, no stone was turned unless deemed necessary.
Integral to the design was utilising the building’s strategic situation, elevated alongside the smart St Christopher’s Street, and facing the grand walls housing a cloistered nunnery. The grand result: all rooms are bathed in natural sunlight boasting a view of the elegantly restored walls across the spacious stone-paved street.

The Barrister Hotel is ideally situated at the heart of Malta’s capital city, which is also its grand historic centre. The hotel proudly stands two blocks away from St George’s Square, at the top end of St Christopher's Street corner with Strait Street. A step inside reveals a sophisticated staircase crowned by an elegant glass dome skylight – for some, the centrepiece of the hotel. The limestone exteriors, so characteristic of Valletta’s grand residencies, and the charming wooden Maltese balconies are true testimony to its prestigious past.

NOURISHING BODY & SOUL
Strait Street (or Strada Stretta as referred to by the Maltese) shares a corner with The Barrister Hotel. Back in the days of British rule, the area housed the ‘watering holes’ frequented by people assigned to protect the island on Her Majesty’s Service, this adding another dimension and much value to the hotel guest’s experience. After a period of relative neglect, like most of Valletta, this populist area is once again the stage where life experiences are being created. As in bygone years, Strada Stretta is the district of choice where patrons can enjoy cuisines from around the globe. A journey for the senses and treats for all palates, it is complemented by the produce of the most respected vineyards, as well as gin bars, single malt clubs and the like. Uniquely located within “a stone’s throw” of the lively heart of this popular district, guests may enjoy The Barrister Hotel peace and quiet whilst just a short stroll away from the city’s diverse entertainment hotspots.
